How to free up storage for large games on Android
How much you need
Installation peaks at two to three times the package size, and games with expansion data download more on first launch. For a 1.5 GB XAPK plan for 4 to 5 GB free; for a game that lists 8 GB on its store page, keep 12 GB free until it has finished its first download. Settings › Storage shows what is used and by what.
The fast wins
- App caches: Settings › Storage › Apps, sort by size, open the biggest and tap Clear cache. Browsers, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok routinely hold 1 to 3 GB each. No data is lost.
- Downloads: installed APK and XAPK files can be deleted after installation. The Downloads folder is often the largest forgotten block.
- Messaging media: WhatsApp › Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage, and Telegram › Settings › Data and Storage › Storage usage, list the biggest files and let you clear them per chat.
- Photos and videos: back up to Google Photos or a computer, then Free up space in Photos removes the local copies.
- Other games: their data is usually the biggest single item. Uninstall games you do not play; progress with a linked account is kept on the server.
Files by Google › Clean finds most of the above in one screen.
What not to delete
Android/obbandAndroid/datafolders of games you still play; they hold their assets and saves.- The Other or System category in storage stats; it is mostly the OS and cannot be cleared.
SD cards
Games install to internal storage. Adoptable storage (formatting the card as internal) exists on some phones and lets apps live on the card, but most game developers block it and performance suffers. Use the card for photos, music and downloads, and keep internal storage for apps.
After freeing space
Reboot before retrying a large install; the system reclaims temporary files from the previous attempt only after a restart. If the install still fails with plenty of space free, see Insufficient storage for the other causes of that message.
